Pronunciation of the Hamza in Certain Verses

Question

(1) In Surah al-Baqara, ruku 14, there are the words: ثُمَّ أَضْطَرُّهُۥٓ (Surah al-Baqara, 2:126). Some drop the hamza, joining the mim [of «ثُمَّ»] with the dad, and say that this is correct; others pronounce the hamza, retaining it, and say that this is correct. So the question is: which [reading] is correct? (2) In Surah al-Ma’ida, ruku 14, there are the words: ثُمَّ أَصْبَحُوا۟ بِهَا (Surah al-Ma’ida, 5:102). Some read dropping the hamza, and some read retaining it (ithbat). Which is correct? (3)

Answer

(1) This hamza is not hamzat al-wasl (the connecting hamza), but that of the first-person singular [imperfect] («أُضْطَرُّهُ» — “I shall compel him”); therefore it does not drop, but is retained. (2) This hamza belongs to the form if‘al (باب الإفعال) and is hamzat al-qat‘ (a cutting hamza), not a connecting one; therefore it too is retained. (3) One should read pausing (waqf)
