Competitions Among Qur’an Reciters at Festive Gatherings
Question
In our city, roughly once every three or four years, a celebration called a “qira’a gathering” is held, to which reciters (qurra’) from the city and from outside it are invited; they display their art of recitation in various styles, to the point that it turns into a kind of comparison and rivalry.
Answer
Such rivalry, boasting, and the giving of prizes for it is a mistaken practice; some reciters have turned it into a means of earning a livelihood — this should be avoided. It is not established by any proof of the Sacred Law.
