The Place of the Second Jumu‘a Adhan and the Standing of Muhammad ibn Ishaq
Question
In the “Sunan” of Abu Dawud there is a hadith which mentions the adhan “at the door of the mosque” (على باب المسجد). Is Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who is in its chain of transmission, a liar (kadhdhab) and an impostor (dajjal) or not? And may the said hadith be acted upon, or is it abandoned (not acted upon)? (2) If some religious scholar calls the said narrator, i.e. Muhammad ibn Ishaq, a liar and an impostor and then insists on it, what ruling of the Pure Shari‘a applies to such a religious scholar? (3)
Answer
Concerning Muhammad ibn Ishaq ﵀ there is disagreement among the authorities of jarh wa ta‘dil (criticism and accreditation of narrators). Some even called him a liar, while others wrote of him as the imam of al-maghazi (the Prophet’s ﷺ campaigns). The preferred view is that in maghazi and sira his narration is accepted without qualification.
