Definition of “Miṣr” (a city) in Islamic jurisprudence
Question
The definition of miṣr in books of fiqh and fatwa does not appear fully comprehensive and exclusive, and scholars differ regarding it. Please provide a precise definition of miṣr such that if any component is missing, the Friday prayer would not be valid, and none of the elements would merely be incidental descriptions or signs, but rather part of the accepted (mufta-bihi) position.
Answer
In fiqh, the discussion focuses on legal rulings concerning the responsible person (mukallaf). Imam Abu Hanifa defined fiqh as: “A person’s knowledge of what is for him and what is against him.” Therefore, fiqh does not normally deal with philosophical definitions of essences (genus, species, essential and accidental attributes).
