The Ruling on Qiyam at the Mawlid

Question

Is qiyam at the mawlid (standing up at the mention of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth) a bid‘a hasana (praiseworthy innovation) or a bid‘a sayyi’a (blameworthy one)? If you call it a bid‘a sayyi’a, then in that case it will necessarily contradict established practice (ta‘amul), inherited tradition (tawaruth) and ijma‘ (consensus), because ijma‘ has already taken place regarding qiyam at the mawlid, as it says in the tafsir “Ruh al-Bayan” (vol. 4, p. 38)

Answer

This customary mawlid is established neither from the Holy Qur’an, nor from the noble hadith, nor from the Rightly Guided Caliphs and the other noble Companions ﵃, nor from the Tabi‘in and the mujtahid imams (Imam A‘zam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam al-Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad and others)
