Reciting the Mawlid in a Musical Style
Question
In our country this custom is in vogue: at the mawlid gathering and at the sermon one person directs that the salawat be recited to a musical metre, together with a eulogistic qasida (na‘t, a poem in praise of the Prophet ﷺ), and all, joining their voices as one, keep reciting again and again, shouting at the top of their voices. Zayd says that reciting in this customary way is bid‘a. ‘Umar says that the Prophet ﷺ ordered some noble Companions ﵃ who were sitting in a gathering: “Recite the salawat!
Answer
This practice is bid‘a: it is not established from the generations testified to as good (qurun mashhud laha bi-l-khayr). ‘Umar claims that it is established — the proof should be demanded of him: in which hadith is such an order of the Noble Prophet ﷺ and such recitation by the noble Companions ﵃ transmitted, and what is the chain of transmission (isnad) of that hadith?
