Invitation to a Mawlid
Question
Zayd invites a certain religious scholar and says: “Have dinner or breakfast at our place.” The scholar goes and eats, and after feeding him Zayd gladly gives the scholar some money — he gives it of his own free will, yet on such occasions the custom of giving something to the scholar certainly exists; then, at the time of departure, he gives some more money and thus pleases the scholar. What is the correct procedure in these cases? And what is the permissible way of [observing] the Mawlid al-Nabi ﷺ?
Answer
To invite [someone] or to give some money purely out of joy or for the sake of reward is correct; but to have a sermon delivered and to pay a fee for it is not correct according to the Sacred Law. If, however, a post of preacher is established on a permanent basis and a person is employed with a fixed monthly salary, that is permissible.
