Mawlid and Qiyam: Proof and Permissibility
Question
What is the nature of the mawlid gathering, and to what extent should it be honoured? Is it permissible or not to stand (qiyam) out of reverence at the mention of the birth [of the Prophet ﷺ]? Some ulama say that standing at the mention of the birth has no basis whatsoever in the Sacred Law; rather, it is impermissible and a bid‘a (innovation in religion), and a Muslim should avoid it.
Answer
The blessed mention of the Noble Prophet ﷺ as such — whether it be the mention of his prayer and other acts of worship, the mention of his buying and selling and other dealings (mu‘amalat), or the mention of his birth and other circumstances [of his life] — is beyond doubt a source of blessing and a cause of reward.
