Standing Out of Respect
Question
Is standing out of respect permissible or not? For instance, here, when the respected Hazrat Rector and Hazrat Shaykh arrive, the honourable students stand up out of respect; or they stand up when some other pious elder arrives. According to the Sacred Law, is this standing permissible or not?
Answer
If the respected Hazrat Rector and Hazrat Shaykh, or any other elder, arrive, then standing up in honour of them is a requirement of adab, and it is mustahabb. But if that standing causes them discomfort and they forbid it, then one should not stand: protecting [them] from discomfort is obligatory (wajib).
