The rule on salary for days off
Question
If some religious institution or religious department, without informing its employee of its constitution and rules, brings him under some rule and causes him a loss — for example, withholding the salary for the long vacation — is this a Shari‘a rule or a worldly one? If it is worldly, how far is its enforcement in religious institutions correct? And if it is a Shari‘a rule, what is its basis? Kindly write a well-researched and detailed answer: what is the ruling on imposing worldly rules on religious institutions?
Answer
In religious service — teaching, instruction and tabligh (propagation of the religion) — the basic principle is that one should not take any compensation from anyone, but should rather say: [ar]لَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مَالًا ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ[/ar] “I ask you no wealth for it; my reward is only with Allah” (Surah Hud, 11:29).
