Disabled after Long Service: Is He Entitled to a Salary?
Question
Zayd lived for a long time in a madrasa and, for a salary, taught lessons (dars) of the Noble Qur’an there. Now, because of continuous illness and old age, he cannot perform any kind of service for the said madrasa. Please tell us: in this situation is he entitled to receive a salary from the madrasa or not? (2) Because of his bad habit, the said Zayd also keeps disrupting the order of the madrasa, as a result of which the teaching and upbringing of the madrasa’s students suffer.
Answer
(1) A salary is compensation for work; when he does not do any work for the madrasa, then what is the salary for? (2) In this condition he should give up residing in the madrasa, and the madrasa’s staff, who are his students, should see him off with courtesy and respect and, by right of discipleship, continue to serve him in person and financially as far as they are able.
