Qunut al-Nazila in the Maghrib Prayer
Question
In “Mishkat” [it is stated that] the procedure of qunut al-nazila in the Hanafi madhhab is only at the time of Fajr (that is, in the fard of the Fajr prayer). Our imam, although a Hanafi, recites it in the Maghrib prayer with the intention [as] in Fajr, and says that more people are present at Maghrib. Is it correct in this way for the followers of one imam to follow another imam? (Reference from hadith.) (2) Is qunut al-nazila wajib and obligatory at times of calamity?
Answer
The imam should refrain from this. Even at a time of general affliction, when the Muslims at large are gripped by calamity, qunut al-nazila, according to Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀, is recited only in the Fajr prayer and not in any other prayer, as is set out in full detail in “I‘la’ al-Sunan”. It is likewise in the books of Hanafi fiqh “al-Durr al-Mukhtar” and “Shami”. (2)
