Collective Recitation of the “Ayat Karima” after Fajr in Times of General Unrest
Question
When unrest becomes general and the lives and property of the Muslims are threatened by non-Muslims, what should the Muslims do in such a situation? In some mosques here the practice is that after the Fajr prayer the people are held back, and all of them together, as a collective gathering, recite over [date] stones the “Ayat Karima”: [ar]لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ[/ar] “There is no god but You! Glory be to You!
Answer
At a time of general calamity, when unrest has spread and, because of killing and plunder, life, property and children are not safe, the recitation of qunut al-nazila is established by hadith and fiqh. The practice of [reciting] the “Ayat Karima” is also beneficial and tried. One should repent and seek forgiveness abundantly.
