The Sunna of Fajr after the Iqama

Question

The Fajr congregation has already started — is it correct now to pray the sunna of Fajr or not? A certain person says that praying the sunna at such a time is not established by hadith, and that the Hanafis who do so act wrongly. Is it contrary to the hadith?

Answer

Imam al-Tahawi in “Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar” has recorded a report (athar) of an eminent Companion: he reached the mosque at a time when the Fajr prayer had already begun; he prayed the sunna at the door of the mosque and then went and joined the congregation. The person who calls this wrong has perhaps not come across it.
