Reciting “لَمْ يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ” Instead of “قَـٰتَلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ”
Question
Surah al-Mumtahana, juz’ 28, ruku‘ 2, verse 3, namely “إِنَّمَا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ قَـٰتَلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ” (60:9): instead of “قَـٰتَلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ” what was recited was “لم يقاتلوكم في الدين. ولم يخرجوكم تاهم الظالمون” (“…who did not fight you over religion. And did not drive you out… tahum (?) the wrongdoers”). Is the prayer valid or not? If it is not, a month has already passed since this recitation, and one of the muqtadis (followers)
Answer
Owing to the corruption of the meaning, the prayer became fasid (invalid). If the day and date are not remembered, the niyya should be made thus: “I am repeating such-and-such prayer that was spoiled on the day such-and-such verse of Surah al-Mumtahana was recited wrongly.” As for the muqtadis, they should be informed as far as informing them lies within one’s power.
