Which vowel to pronounce on the ta’ of “qad qamati-s-salah”
Question
One person says that it must be recited “qad qamati-s-salatu, qad qamati-s-salatu” [with damma] and not otherwise, or else the iqama will not be fulfilled. Another person says that it is to be recited “qad qamati-s-salati”, i.e. the ta’ with kasra. Each party tells the other: “By your way the iqama will not be fulfilled.” Whose view is to be accepted, and what is correct?
Answer
The final ta’, in a state of stopping (waqf) or pausing (sakta), becomes ha’; therefore neither damma nor kasra is pronounced on it. In its original form it carried a damma — when there is no stop or pause on it; with a pause it is vowelless (sakin). Kasra is wrong. In terms of grammatical analysis, “al-salah” is the subject (fa‘il)
