Is there turning of the head (iltifat) in the iqama?
Question
Just as the mu’adhdhin, while giving the adhan, turns his face right and left at “hayya ‘ala-l-falah” and “hayya ‘ala-s-salah”, should he likewise turn his face right and left in the iqama at “hayya ‘ala-s-salah” and “hayya ‘ala-l-falah”? Mawlana ‘Abd al-Shakur Lakhnawi ﵀ wrote in ‘Ilm al-Fiqh (vol. 2, p. 10) that turning the face right and left at “hayya ‘ala-s-salah” and “hayya ‘ala-l-falah” is sunna only in the adhan.
Answer
There are both views on this. Some have said that if the place is large one turns to both sides, otherwise not: [ar]وَأَطْلَقَ فِي الِالْتِفَاتِ وَلَمْ يُقَيِّدْهُ بِالْأَذَانِ، وَقَدَّمْنَا عَنِ الْقُنْيَةِ أَنْ يُحَوِّلَ فِي الْإِقَامَةِ أَيْضًا، وَفِي السِّرَاجِ الْوَهَّاجِ: لَا يُحَوِّلُ فِيهَا لِأَنَّهَا لِإِعْلَامِ الْحَاضِرِينَ، بِخِلَافِ الْأَذَانِ فَإِنَّهُ إِعْلَامٌ…
