When the followers should stand for the prayer during the iqama

Question

At the time of the iqama, should people stand and straighten the row, or should the followers and the imam remain seated and stand at “hayya ‘ala-s-salah”? What is the correct ruling? Please write the answer with references to the books.

Answer

Great emphasis has been placed on straightening the rows (taswiyat al-sufuf). If everyone remains seated and stands at “hayya ‘ala-s-salah”, the rows cannot be straightened — especially since the imam is to begin the prayer at “qad qamati-s-salah”, for this too has been counted among the etiquettes (adab) of the prayer.
