A non-Muslim accompanying a Muslim’s funeral and a Muslim accompanying a non-Muslim’s funeral
Question
Today it is a custom in the world that non-Muslims (kafirs) go with the funerals of Muslims to the graveyard and even take hold of a leg [of the bier]; likewise Muslims go with the funeral of a non-Muslim and even take hold of the Hindu funeral bier. Is this permissible or not?
Answer
If a non-Muslim neighbour falls ill, visiting him and treating him with kindness is established. But taking hold of the bier and going to the cremation ground to burn him is not established; it is necessary (lazim) to avoid this. The same applies the other way round.
