Putting jujube leaves in the grave
Question
After burying the deceased, people commonly put jujube leaves on top of the planks and then pour in the earth. Is the punishment lightened in any way by virtue of the jujube branch, or is it a bid‘a? They say that the jujube tree is Sidrat al-Muntaha, that is, it is in the seventh heaven, and by its merit sins are reduced. What is its basis in the religion? Should a jujube branch be put in the grave on top of the planks, or should it be abandoned?
Answer
It should be abandoned: this act has no basis in the Shari‘a; it is a bid‘a and a distinguishing mark (shi‘ar) of the Rafidis.
