Talqin after burial

Question

Is talqin (instructing the deceased) after burial established from the Companions and the Successors or not? Most jurists have permitted reciting it, that is, practising it, as in “Mazahir-i Haqq”, “Mi’a Masa’il”, “Arba‘in” and others. [In] “Mazahir-i Haqq” (vol. 1, vol. 1 [sic], Kitab al-Iman, chapter on establishing the punishment of the grave): “Talqin after the burial of the deceased is not established from most of the Hanafi school, but according to most Shafi‘is and Hanafis it is mustahabb.

Answer

This issue is a branch of the issue of the hearing of the dead (sama‘ al-mawta): those according to whom [such hearing] is established hold [the view of] talqin after burial, and those according to whom it is not established do not hold it. There was disagreement about the hearing of the dead among the Companions too, and the disagreement continued afterwards as well.
