Fixing a Day and a Number for Salawat and Dhikr

Question

Hazrat Ibn Mas‘ud ﵁, who once, after the passing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saw some of his students gathered in an appointed place for dhikr and worship, said to them in anger and by way of admonition: “O people! Are you more rightly guided than the Companions of the blessed Messenger ﷺ, or are you running towards misguidance?” In another narration it is related that he said: “In the time of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ I did not see dhikr of this kind, and now you people are inventing this new way.

Answer

To make binding, on one’s own authority, the fixing of any date, day of the week, number and the like that is not established [in the Sacred Law], and to declare it a ruling of the Sacred Law, will fall under the same censure. An abundance of salawat on Friday and on the night of Friday is established.
