Gathering on the Night of Mid-Sha‘ban for Du‘a, Salawat and Salam

Question

On the night of mid-Sha‘ban (Laylat al-Bara’a), after the ‘Isha prayer, a collective Qur’an recitation is held, sweets are distributed, a speech is delivered, and people go to the graveyard. What is the ruling of the Sacred Law?

Answer

On the night of mid-Sha‘ban, to perform supererogatory prayers (nawafil), to recite [the Qur’an], and to go quietly to the graveyard and pray for forgiveness for the dead is an excellent and beneficial thing, a deed of reward. But gathering for it and turning it into a ceremony is wrong. Fasting on the 15th of Sha‘ban is also found in a narration.
