The Rector’s Double Salary in Ramadan and Not Performing the Assigned Work

Question

The persons in charge of a religious madrasa (the director and the rector) have set their own salaries even higher than those of the head teacher and the shaykh al-hadith. And for their assigned duties, namely raising funds, they go out only in the blessed month of Ramadan. These gentlemen are also exempt from signing the attendance register. The entire staff of the madrasa remains distressed because salaries are not paid: salaries fall six or seven months into arrears.

Answer

If the arrangement is that in such-and-such a month such-and-such a salary will be paid, there is room for this, but the work entrusted must be completed. Not performing the assigned work while taking a salary is not permissible. If the council members give permission despite knowing, that does not make the salary lawful; rather, they too become partners in the offence.
