A Junub Went Down into a Well: Are He and the Water Pure or Impure?

Question

A man had a nocturnal emission (ihtilam). When he woke up, he went down into a well to perform ghusl without having performed istinja’; the well was not ten by ten cubits. In this case, has that man become pure (tahir) or not? And will the water of the well remain pure and purifying (tahir wa mutahhir) or not? And if that man goes down into the well for the ghusl of janaba after performing istinja’ and removing the impurity from his body, what is the ruling on the well and on the man in question?

Answer

If he did not perform istinja’ with water, and rather there was real impurity (najasa haqiqiyya) on his body, then he did not become pure, and all the water became impure (najis); because of this water his whole body also became soiled with impurity.
