Qunut al-nazila: was it abandoned, and in which prayers is it recited
Question
[ar]عَنْ أَنَسٍ ﵁ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَنَتَ شَهْراً ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ. رواه أبو داود والنسائي[/ar] “From Anas ﵁: the Prophet ﷺ recited the qunut for a month, then left it” (narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i). Do the words “then left it” mean that reciting the qunut is a sunna for the umma, or that it has been abandoned?
Answer
Continuity [in it] has been abandoned. At a time of severe general calamity it is legislated. Its place, according to the preferred view, is the fajr prayer. The Rightly Guided Caliphs ﵃, each in his own reign, recited it in the fajr prayer at a time of need.
