If a gross error is made in a fard prayer, the prayer is not valid even after correction
Question
An imam, in the Fajr prayer, while reciting from the 24th juz’, in the verse “أَوْ تَقُولَ حِينَ تَرَى ٱلْعَذَابَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِى كَرَّةً فَأَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ” (Surah al-Zumar, 39:58) recited “فاكون من الخاسرين”, and then he himself recited “فاكون من المحسنين”. In the same rak‘a, further on, in the verse “بَلِ ٱللَّهَ فَٱعْبُدْ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ” (Surah al-Zumar, 39:66) he recited “وكن من الخاسرين”. A muqtadi prompted him, and the imam corrected it by reciting “وكن من الشاكرين”.
Answer
A gross error is one by which the meaning is corrupted and [the words] become contrary to what the Qur’an intends, as in the case asked about. By such an error a fard prayer becomes fasid, and it will not become valid even if the error is corrected.
