A wage for Qur’an recitation and for preaching
Question
Question: Zayd says that taking a wage for preaching is permissible, because if we do not take a wage we cannot meet our needs; therefore we take a wage for the detention of our time (habs al-waqt). ‘Umar says: if taking a wage for preaching is permissible, then taking a wage for reciting the Qur’an should also be permissible, because just as preaching is an act of obedience (ta‘a)
Answer
Hiring for acts of obedience (isti’jar ‘ala al-ta‘at) is in principle (asalatan) impermissible, but the later mujtahids (muta’akhkhirun), according to their ijtihad and taking Shari‘a necessity (darura shar‘iyya) into account, made an exception for certain acts of obedience, and preaching is among them.
