Payment for reciting the Qur’an in Tarawih

Question

Question: According to the Hanafi school, what is the ruling on listening to the Qur’an for a wage in Tarawih in blessed Ramadan — is it permissible or impermissible?

Answer

Taking and giving a wage merely for reciting the Holy Qur’an in Tarawih is not permissible; both the giver and the taker will be sinful and will remain deprived of reward. If no one can be found who will recite without a wage, then they should pray Tarawih with “Alam tara kayfa” (the surahs beginning with Surah al-Fil).
