Payment for completing the Qur’an in Tarawih
Question
Question: Is it permissible to take a wage for reciting the Qur’an or not? If not, then refute it by the four proofs (al-adilla al-arba‘a — the Qur’an, the Sunna, consensus and analogy); and if it is, then establish it by the four proofs, or only by the Qur’an and hadith. And on the supposition that a wage for reciting the Qur’an is impermissible, what is the answer to this issue: in our Bengal, or in most parts of Bengal, it is the custom that huffaz come from India, complete the Qur’an (khatm)
Answer
Taking a wage for reciting the Holy Qur’an is haram, because of the words of the Exalted: [ar]وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِى ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا[/ar] “And do not sell My signs for a paltry price” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:41). [ar]عن بريدة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: من قرأ القرآن يتأكل به الناس جاء يوم القيامة ووجهه عظم ليس عليه لحم.
