Making preaching a device for earning a living

Question

Question: Many people have made preaching and exhortation merely a device for earning a living. How is this?

Answer

Preaching whose sole aim is earning has no effect. Preaching merely to earn money is not something that brings reward, nor is there permission for it in the Shari‘a. However, it is also not right for everyone to decide that such-and-such a preacher has this intention.
