Tamattu‘ Is Not Permitted in Hajj Badal

Question

On the ship that sails for Hajj in the month of Shawwal, the period for the one performing Hajj on behalf of another becomes long, and he has to bear immense hardship. Therefore, out of necessity — for the removal of hardship and for ease — will Hajj tamattu‘ be valid for the one performing Hajj on behalf of another or not?

Answer

Tamattu‘ is not permitted in Hajj badal. If such a person has to go in Shawwal itself, he should not enter ihram at the miqat (Yalamlam); rather, on reaching Jeddah he should go to Madinah, and from there, at the beginning of Dhu’l-Hijja, enter ihram for Hajj and come to Makka, and perform the rites according to the rules of the Shari‘a.
