Which Brings Greater Reward: Giving Money to an Elementary Religious School or Hajj Badal

Question

Hajj was not obligatory on my mother, and she greatly longed for it, but she passed away. I want to do something to convey reward to her: will there be greater reward in having Hajj badal performed, or in helping a languishing (?) elementary religious school, which is in danger of closing down?

Answer

Since Hajj was not fard on the deceased and the aim is to convey reward to her, then, if the school gives children religious education and is also in need, there is greater reward in giving money there to sustain the school and help it develop.
