When Is It Necessary to Take One's Wife Along for Hajj?

Question

Zayd is going for Hajj to the House of Allah. His wife has one thousand rupees in cash, which will be enough for the fare and so on, but she does not have money for provisions for the journey (zad). His wife demands of Zayd: “If I stayed at home, you would provide for my maintenance (nafaqa); give me that same money so that I too may go for Hajj with you.” In such a case, does Hajj become fard for Zayd's wife? Is Zayd's wife in the right in her demand for maintenance?

Answer

Since Zayd is going for Hajj and the wife has the travel expenses and the fare for going and returning, there is no reason for the wife's maintenance (nafaqa) to lapse. Had the wife not been going, Zayd would have been obliged to give her maintenance before leaving. However, if she goes along, the maintenance due will be that which would be due at home (hadar)
