Hajj When One’s Finances Will Be at Zero After It

Question

The financial position of the questioner is such that, after paying his wife’s mahr and after the expenses of his family and dependants, the expenses of Hajj can easily be met. Does Hajj become fard, even though after the Hajj his financial position will be at zero?

Answer

In this case Hajj will be fard: [ar]تِلْكَ الْقُدْرَةُ فَاضِلَةٌ عَنْ نَفَقَتِهِ وَنَفَقَةِ عِيَالِهِ إِلَى حِينِ عَوْدِهِ، وَقِيلَ: بَعْدَهُ بِيَوْمٍ، وَقِيلَ: بِشَهْرٍ[/ar] “This ability is in excess of his own maintenance and the maintenance of his dependants until the time of his return; it has also been said: for a day after it; and it has also been said: for a month”…
