The Mawlid Gathering and the Qiyam
Question
Is the qiyam (standing) at the mawlid, at the moment the birth is mentioned, with the intention of venerating the Prophet ﷺ — bodily or spiritually — mustahabb or legislated (mashru‘) under the Sacred Law, and to what degree, or not? Some of its proponents argue from the noble verse of Surah al-Fath: [ar]لِّتُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتُعَزِّرُوهُ وَتُوَقِّرُوهُ وَتُسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا[/ar] “…
Answer
The blessed remembrance of the Noble Prophet ﷺ — whether it is the mention of his birth or the mention of his acts of worship, dealings, jihad, and his daily and nightly routine — is, without doubt, a cause and source of good and blessing. However, the mawlid gathering in its [now] customary form is baseless, contrary to the Sacred Law and a bid‘a (an innovation in religion)
