The Objectionable Practices of the Mawlid Gathering in Detail, and Payment for Preaching
Question
The Mawlid al-Nabi (celebration of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth), which is permissible from the standpoint of the Sacred Law — and taking money for preaching and admonition without its having been fixed beforehand, that is, that it be given the name of a “wage”: “We shall deliver preaching and admonition, or recite the Mawlid al-Nabi, at your place from such-and-such hour until such-and-such hour, and we shall take from you a wage for such work” — is this permissible or not?
Answer
The blessed remembrance of the Prophet ﷺ — whether it be the remembrance of his birth or of jihad, prayer, fasting, hajj, marriage, worldly dealings and the like — is undoubtedly a cause of blessing and a means of reward. However, in this age the gatherings of the mawlid are forbidden by the Sacred Law because they comprise many objectionable and prohibited things (munkarat).
