The Origin of Gyarahwin and Mawlid
Question
Nowadays one section of the Muslims holds, on specific dates of Rabi‘ al-Awwal, gatherings of Mawlid al-Nabi (the celebration of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth) and of Gyarahwin (the eleventh-day commemoration held monthly in honour of ‘Abd al-Qadir Jilani ﵀) with great pomp. What is the ruling on what is done there: feeding people, reciting qasidas, distributing sweets, reciting Surah al-Fatiha aloud, and the like? They say that this is bid‘a hasana (a good innovation)
Answer
The blessed remembrance of the Most Holy Messenger, the Noble Prophet ﷺ (may my father and mother be his ransom) — whether it is the mention of his blessed birth or the mention of his acts of worship, dealings (mu‘amalat), social conduct (mu‘asharat)
