A vow of a khatm of the Qur’an

Question

Question: Seeing his wife suffering from labour pains, the husband or other relatives said: “If Allah delivers from this hardship, I will have a khatm (complete recitation) of the Qur’an done,” or they said: “In this hardship something ought to be done for the sake of Allah,” whereupon someone said: “Have the khatm Yunus (the supplication of the Prophet Yunus ﵇) recited,” and everyone agreed to this. Now, in both of the cases mentioned, is fulfilment wajib or not?

Answer

A vow is valid only for something that is an intended act of worship (‘ibada maqsuda) and of a kind (jins) of which there is a wajib. The Noble Qur’an is such an act of worship: its recitation in prayer is wajib. The fuqaha accepted as valid the vow of i‘tikaf, whose essence is staying (labth) in the mosque for worship, and they proposed as its basis (ma’khadh)
