Inquiring about a vow
Question
Question: If on a Friday someone brings some kind of sweets and distributes them, and people, without asking what they are, in whose name they are, and of what kind — is it permissible to eat such sweets or not? And if someone says, “If my son recovers from this illness, I will distribute sweets in the mosque,” what is the ruling on eating them?
Answer
If there is doubt, he should find out what these sweets are; if there is no doubt, there is no need to investigate without reason: if he wishes, he may take; if he does not wish, he need not take. [ar]دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكَ[/ar] “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt” (hadith).
