Making a vow on passing an examination
Question
Question: My daughter sat the high school examination, and in this connection I made a vow that if she passed I would feed eleven poor people. Is feeding them necessary or not? The girl has passed. I also vowed that if she passed I would keep fasts. Is keeping the fasts necessary or not?
Answer
Since she has passed, eleven poor people should be fed, or given cash — each one given the amount of sadaqat al-fitr. The fasts of the vow should also be kept. If someone is unable to fast, then in place of each fast the equivalent of one sadaqa should be given in cash or grain.
