The Mosque’s Worn-Out Mat in the Grave
Question
There is a common custom here: the mosque’s worn-out mat is put into a grave, and then a new mat is bought and left in its place. Is this custom permissible or not?
Answer
Spreading a mat beneath the deceased in the grave is makruh (thus in “al-Tahtawi”). If some person brought a mat to the mosque and spread it, and now it has become worn out and is no longer fit for use in the mosque, then the original owner who spread it has the choice to do with it whatever he wishes — thus in “al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya”.
