Teaching in a Mosque for a Salary

Question

I saw in a sermon of Mawlana Thanawi (may his shadow endure) that it is impermissible for tradesmen to practise their trade in the mosque, to the extent that one who teaches the Noble Qur’an for a salary is also not permitted to teach the Qur’an in the mosque. From this ruling I understood that giving religious instruction in the mosque for a salary or as a means of earning is impermissible.

Answer

For one who sits in the mosque and teaches for the benefit of the mosque — for example, to guard the mosque — or out of compulsion because there is no other place, it is permissible; but to sit in the mosque and teach merely making it a trade is impermissible and contrary to respect for the mosque.
