Teaching Children (taʿlim al-sibyan) in a Mosque
Question
Is it permissible or not to teach boys the Qur’an and basic religion inside the mosque? The answer to this question in Fatawa Dar al-Ulum Deoband (volumes 5 and 6, p. 298, fatwa 879/1289), an exact copy of which is enclosed, is clear: if the predominant supposition is that the mosque will be made impure, it is haram; otherwise it is makruh tanzihi.
Answer
Permission is given to give religious instruction in the mosque provided that the respect of the mosque is maintained, there is no noise and commotion, the children are not so small that they would make the mosque impure, and they are not beaten or scolded, and that because of the teaching the worshippers are not disturbed in their prayer.
