Teaching Small Children in a Mosque
Question
In a mosque here my maternal uncle is the imam. He receives a salary from the mosque for the imamate. Apart from this, he gives Arabic instruction to some boys and girls for a monthly fee in the mosque, where worship takes place. The mosque has a cupboard in which the books endowed to the mosque, the Noble Qur’an, individual parts of the Qur’an (juz’) and other necessary items are kept; in this cupboard the teacher has these children’s private books placed.
Answer
(1) To teach in the mosque permanently for a salary is makruh, especially in a situation where there is also a room near the mosque in which teaching can be given. Small children who do not distinguish between purity and impurity — and moreover, if it is feared that they will make the mosque impure — are forbidden even to be brought into the mosque.
