The difference between the price of the sacrificial hide and zakat
Question
Question: If a person uses the hide of the sacrificial animal himself, it is permissible, and if he sells it, it is necessary to give that money away as sadaqa. What is the reason that he cannot use zakat himself, yet he can use the hide for his own needs?
Answer
In the sacrifice, the act of worship has been fulfilled by the shedding of blood (iraqat al-dam). The meat, fat, bones and hide he may use himself, and he may also give them as gifts to those people to whom he cannot give zakat — for example, his ascendants and descendants (usul and furu‘), a wealthy person, a sayyid.
