What to do if the price of the sacrificial hide is stolen
Question
Question: A pickpocket took from Zayd’s pocket the money for the hide of the sacrificial animal, which was forty-five rupees. Zayd had kept this money to give it as sadaqa to a madrasa. Has this been pardoned by the Shari‘a, or is it still due to be paid?
Answer
Since Zayd had sold the hide of the sacrifice, giving its price away as sadaqa was wajib. Because it was stolen before being given as sadaqa, the wajib has not been discharged; now he should give the same amount from his own funds.
