Which is better: giving the hide as sadaqa or its price

Question

Question: Is it better to give the hide of the sacrificial animal as sadaqa, or to sell it and give its price as sadaqa?

Answer

It is better to give the sacrificial hide itself as sadaqa; it is also correct to put it to one’s own use — for example, to make a prayer mat, a water-skin or a bucket out of it. But if he has sold it and obtained money, then giving that away as sadaqa is wajib; keeping it for himself or spending it on the needs of his family is not correct (“Majma‘ al-Anhur”, vol. 2, p. 511).
