Inducing a talaq by the lure of a beautiful girl

Question

Question: Hind enticed Zayd, saying: “Your wife is ugly and my daughter is beautiful; if you give your wife talaq, we will marry our daughter to you.” Zayd fell for the enticement, and Hind had a letter brought and made Zayd write three talaqs. Zayd’s maternal aunt took this letter out of Zayd’s pocket, tore it up and threw it away. Zayd’s wife was at her parents’ home and knows nothing of this. Hind refused to marry her daughter to Zayd. Zayd regrets what he has done. What is the ruling of the Shari‘a?

Answer

By giving talaq out of this greed Zayd did something very bad; doing so is a sin, and repentance and seeking forgiveness (tawba and istighfar) are wajib upon Zayd. A major (mughallaza) divorce has taken effect: now he can neither take her back (ruju‘), nor does any room remain for marrying her again without halala.
