Asking forgiveness after pronouncing three talaqs
Question
Question: An argument was going on between Zayd, his father and his wife. Zayd said to his father: “Keep quiet, or else you will have to regret it.” The quarrel kept growing, and Zayd gave his wife talaq three times, with three utterances. After that a letter came from Zayd: he now asks his wife for forgiveness and admits his mistake. In such a case, has talaq taken effect on Zayd’s wife or not?
Answer
In such a case a major (mughallaza) divorce has taken effect, and now she will not become lawful for him by his asking forgiveness. Without halala there is no way of re-establishing the marital bond.
